We issue avalanche advisories for three zones in northwest Montana:
Whitefish Range
Whitefish Range – from the Canadian border south to the Flathead Valley
The Whitefish Range is split into two zones. In the Northern Whitefish Range, popular destinations include Grave Creek and the Ten Lakes (Kootenai National Forest), Stryker Ridge and Red Meadow Lake, Hornet Lookout, and Ninko Cabin. The Southern Whitefish Range encompasses Werner Lookout, areas around Whitefish Mountain Resort, and Canyon Creek.
The Great Bear Wilderness, the Apgar Range, the McDonald Valley, and Marias Pass
Most of this zone lies in or adjacent to the Great Bear Wilderness. Popular destinations include the Skiumah, Rescue, and Cascadilla Creek drainages, the Essex area, Desert Mountain, and Great Northern Mountain. The zone also includes three areas within Glacier National Park: the Apgar Range, McDonald Valley (Snyder and Avalanche Lakes and Mt. Brown), and the peaks north of US Highway 2 near Marias Pass (Running Rabbit, Shields, False Shields, Elk and Little Dog). South of Highway 2, the zone includes Tranquil Basin, Skyland and Puzzle Creek, and Challenge Cabin.
Flathead Range
& Glacier NP
Swan Range
From Columbia Mountain to Napa Point
Forecast for this zone cover the east and west sides of the Swan Range. Popular areas include Doris and Lost Johnny Creeks, Peters Ridge, Noisy and Jewel Basins, Six Mile Creek, and North and South Lost Creeks.
