Ski Patrol at Whitefish Mountain Resort was doing explosive control work in the face of the current wet avalanche cycle and released two separate avalanches that are not often seen on controlled slopes, in bounds each one released with explosives, failed initially on the Groundhod Day crust (1-2 ft crown height) and stepped down to the ground, relasing the entire snowpack.
The debris field is 4-5 acres and up to 10 ft deep. 6-8 inch trees were snapping like toothpicks.
